Description Share Post Best of All Worlds Kenneth Oppel (Guppy Books) The morning after Xavier, his father and heavily pregnant stepmother awaken, Zav’s aware something is different. It seems their cottage is in an entirely new location. In fact, there’s no lake and the sound of goats. Where are they? Although they attempt to work out what’s happened to them, it’s evident they’re alone, the only humans within this place. In fact, it seems that they’re inside some sort of impenetrable zone. What’s more, when Nia goes into labour, it’s clear that whoever is watching them, is invested in this baby, and his family. However, what if, after three years, another family arrives? One that Xavier tracks, so that he sees the ‘midges’ who seem to be in control? What’s more this is a family with very different views from their own, who seem determined to break their way out of the ‘dome’ despite all Xavier’s family know about this place.  Furthermore, this is a family with fundamentalist values that stir and strain at relationships, including that of Xavier’s with the elder daughter, Mackenzie? Could there be some sort of retribution in this place? Or could this place be the Best of All Worlds as it seems ‘Erf‘s decline has exacerbated during Zav’s family’s three year absence? Kenneth Oppel presents a magnificent book that challenges readers with purpose, courage and insight. Best of All Worlds is exceptional. Like The Twelve, for example, we are in the realm of ‘what if’ that leaves us with impressions and considerations that linger well beyond our reading. Bookwagon recommends this title to all older readers.
